Welcome to You’re Probably Getting Screwed, a weekly newsletter and video series from J.D. Scholten and Justin Stofferahn about the Second Gilded Age and the ways economic concentration is putting politics and profits over working people.
Wait… Wasn’t there a You’re Probably Getting Screwed on Tuesday? Yes, but in 2025 we plan to do more.
This week, J.D. participated in an event for the Institute of Local Self-Reliance and State Innovation Exchange. Headlining the event was Attorney General of Minnesota Keith Ellison and Attorney General of Arizona Kris Mayes.
Book Club!!!
We are adding a book club!!!
Each month we will be promoting a book and at the end of the month we will interview the author. We encourage folks to read the book and send in questions that we will ask the authors.
Our first book is Austin Frerick’s Barons. This book came out in 2024 and has received a ton of good reviews and press, which you can read about here.
You can purchase the book at your local bookstore and many places online, including at the Greatest Store in the Universe.

BEFORE YOU GO
If you have ideas on who to interview or what book should be the “book of the month” down the road, please let us know.
Standing Tall for All,
J.D. Scholten
Suggestions for Interviews: Disability activists. Alice Wong is a great place to start and she can tell you about others. (super important given DOGE - Musk etc)
Books: WHEN WE WALK BY - Homelessness. ( you might find something better with a little research. This one is great. A good read. It's not entirely pointed at political/institutional causes of the problem although it does talk about that.
Great Choice for First 📕 club! 👍🏽. I wish I had the fortitude to read it and the other great books on Iowa’s decline and act on it. So I am extremely grateful for all your efforts! 👍🏽✊🏼✊🏼💙
